International development assistance is a form of international support driven by the lack of development in a region or country. The assistance is usually funded by a third party – an international institution or organisation – and implemented by a provider who has the skills, resources and expertise in the field. Development assistance differs from other forms of international assistance in that it implements projects that build the capacity of recipient countries to manage their own future challenges or similar needs, in a long-term and sustainable manner.
